A highly enjoyable read. Valinda and Drake’s relationship is very sweet and I loved reading their story.
Beverly Jenkins does a great job of weaving in the history and creating a robust setting and characters. The LeVeq family is a joy to read about and I love that they showed Valinda what a supportive and loving family is 🩷

A black teacher that just wants to teach the freed slaves how to read and a random wealthy pirate that saves her from a pickle when she is down in her luck. After more unfortunate things she finds herself spending a lot of time with him and his family and feelings arise, only issue is, she's already engaged.
I actually like a lot of the ideas, especially her friendship and that dynamic. That being said I didn't love the male love interest, his french pirate persona came off a little too strong and the audiobook narrator probably didn't help with that.
I enjoyed the book but for some reason couldn't get as invested as I would have liked. I guess I also didn't fully feel the chemistry between the two in a way that I wanted. Regardless it was a good time and I'm excited to read even more Beverly Jenkins in the future.

The phrasing was just reeeeeally repetitive and tbh I did not like the flirtation style, it gave me the ick. Too bad because they were both interesting characters and the setting was good.

If you're looking for a historically set romance this is a good one? Primarily sweet!? There are BIG brushes against very dark situations and there are some deaths on and off "screen" but everything works out for the main character(s)... The smut was kind of funny imo.
