if there's one thing beverly jenkins is gonna do, it's have me completely hooked with a story. this one had a slightly different vibe than her previous books i've read due to it being set in an earlier time period, and i really liked it. valinda was such a badass FMC, much like all of her other FMCs, and i loved seeing the love between her and drake blossom.

So I listened to the audiobook of this and I think the narrator didn’t work for me, it just didn’t mesh with the romance.

That being said, this story was so rich, the romance was almost the last thing I needed! I learned so much about the south in the years after freedom for the Black community. Beverly Jenkins really is an amazing writer, I really recommend this as a story, just for the setting!

I wanted to read this as a final note in the Le Veq series (which I've LOVED) but the timelines and how they overlap with earlier books just doesn't make sense to me? And I'm missing my favorite FMC, Zahra, a bit too much, so knowing she won't have any family cameos in this made me lose some steam. Likely a great intro to Women Who Dare but a bit confusing as a continuation of the Le Veq brothers.
