This was my first ever historical romance novel featuring black characters. I don’t know why I was so surprised by accurate descriptions of how black people were treated right after the Reconstruction act and the Civil War. I felt that even though at times the story was dark, it did not overshadow the romance. I did think that the beginning was slow and it did not really pick up for me until the 50% mark.

I loved everything about this book. The main characters were enjoyable. There was a bit of harm that the leads had to overcome, and the research done to highlight life in the late 1800’s was well done!!!

3.25/3.5 stars. I didn’t not like this at all. I just didn’t love it. I wanted more tension. More longing. I wanted more story. It’s still a largely enjoyable read. And it was wild hearing republicans referred to as radical (set in post civil war NOLA).
