I LOVED this!
The explanations of the history were seamless and not “info-dump”, the LaVeq family is fascinating (I want to go back and read the original series).
The romance between Drake and Val made sense, and the communication between them was refreshing; these people don’t hide anything from each other and even when they had a disagreement, their reconciliation was mature.
The steamy scenes made sense considering the historical era we are reading about.
The audiobook was beautifully done.
I can see now why Beverly Jenkins is considered the queen of inclusive historical romance, and I will be reading more of her books. I also look forward to reading her older books to see how her writing style evolved over the years.

This was fantastic. I have never read a historical romance that taught me so much history! I loved learning more about Freedman's schools, civil war battles, and what life was like post civil war. And the steam factor was great!
4.25 ⭐️ Aye man! Are all of the LeVeq bother’s written this well!?
Drake an architect & the 3rd oldest brother of the LeVeq clan, is dreamy

Another winner from Mrs Bev! I really loved reuniting with the LeVeq family and reading about such a strong and fiercely independent Black woman. I also appreciated the banter between the two and found that the third act miscommunication was well done as was the "grovel". They were believable without being too dramatic and easily overcame because communication! Highly recommend as I do all of this author's books.
Ms. Bev is the queen for a reason. Her books are just so consistently good, you absolutely can’t go wrong with her. And this one is set in New Orleans, first on my list of places to travel once planes are a thing again! Valinda is from the north, serving the newly emancipated as a schoolteacher. She plans to return home to her fiance once the job wraps up, but she finds herself falling in love with the city--and a certain dreamy architect whose family takes her in when she falls on hard times. Rebel was my first introduction to the legendary LeVeq family, but I’m clearly going to have to go back and read some of the books from prior series because holy shit, these strong men and the even stronger women who love them!
My favorite Beverly Jenkins book that I've read so far!
Everyone should read this one. There is so much history that is included in navigating life in New Orleans after emancipation. Valinda and Drake were wonderful and I loved the emphasis on building a school!
