It's mostly fine, hillerman isn't the best at writing non cardboard cutout female characters though.

Absolutely loved the mystery! Also the Jim/Janet drama was so good! Breakup felt earned, and I adored Bern’s crush on Jim! He’s always noticing that she’s pretty, I love it

This one was decent, but the mystery wasn't too compelling and was pretty clear from the jump. The development of relationships and characters continues to be the most interesting aspect of these books for me, so I wish there was a bit more time spent on them.

Another excellent installment in the annals of the Navajo Tribal Police. In this book, Hillerman takes on the age old difficulties of tribal police on huge reservations with too few backup officers. When officer Chee discovers the body of a Navajo police officer with a Hopi eagle poacher kneeling over him, it seems like an open and shut case. But the Hopi maintains that he didn't harm the man and Chee starts to have doubts. In the meantime, retired Lieutenant Leaphorn is asked to check into a missing person's case involving a missing medical researcher who disappeared from the same region. An ambitious white lawyer in the meantime chooses to seek the death penalty for the Hopi poacher to make an example of him, citing the greater danger of policing reservations in the southwest. Chee and Leaphorn find themselves torn on this between their love of the merciful Navajo Way and the challenges that their jobs entail. Making matters more complicated is Chee's love interest is representing the accused Hopi. The two men manage to work it out through several shocking twists and turns involving academic dishonesty, the private religion of indigenous tribes, the balance between justice and mercy, and the ongoing dispute between federal and native law enforcement. This volume also spells the end of the much ballyhooed relationship between Chee and Janet Pete, opening the door to the true love of his life: Bernadette Manuelito.

Toimiva, joskin melko yksioikoinen dekkari.

This book was a bit confusing as the setting was not properly set. A map would have been useful as well as a list of characters. Decent book in reference to the culture aspect but lacking in the mystery department.
