Cool conceptual metaphorical sci fi adventure. Makes you think a lot, while also being so weird you almost want to laugh. Complex characters, each in their own way. Weird obsession with babies though. You'll understand once you read it.

This book has followed my thoughts for such a long time, and I was relieved to find that, after rereading this book, I still enjoy it almost as much as I did when I was in the 11th grade (or so). The themes it touches, although dealt with in a radical, but spoofy ways, are not superficial. They are valid in the present day; alternative reality, fate, genetic engineering, conflict between the sexes and the generations, ecological travail, dehumanization, mundane and empty modern life versus self-awareness, caretaking and mindfulness (in some scenes, the protagonists hold meditative conversation with their own cells to bespoke them into health in order ensure anti-cancer/anti-aging). In some ways, I believe that this book influenced me at some level in life choices (career choices and such). I never understood why this book was so under-appreciated!
