3.5. This had a great ending but a very slow start (and middle) and while it was satisfying where all the characters ended up, I was never that attached to any of them.

Set in the backdrop of Madrid during the Spanish Inquisition, a young scullery maid’s ambition pulls her into a competition where the stakes could not be higher. On one side, glory, riches, and power. On the other, imprisonment, torture, and death. The only thing standing between her and a death sentence is the whether or not her powers are perceived as gifts from God and whether she can convince the world of her false piety, or whether her powers are the Devil’s magic enhanced by her suspect bloodline. Add in some political intrigue, a doomed romance, and a fast-paced narrative, and you’ve this enjoyable work of historical fantasy.
