i think i have decided that regine abel is not for me. i just really dont like how she writes dialogue, and the other elements dont make up for how much i dislike the dialogue.

This was a let down compared to the other books in this series. There was just so many unbelievable plot bits, and it began to feel like a 16-year-old's diary entry of becoming a mermaid rather than anything decent. I found myself both bored and irritated with the plot, and just wanted to zoom to the end so that I could hop to the next book (which would hopefully be better).

Specific things I did not like:
- FMC knowingly acting childish, at the suggestion of MIL
- The whole DNA changing and becoming a mermaid was a little ridiculous
- the plot was dull with sick/visit/sleep/panic/progress in a cycle
- daft overpowered abilities?
- over reactions to slow progress
- overly perfect MMC who was two-dimensional
-
the biological indication of soulmates plot, which I normally don't mind but just irked me at the end of this because it added nothing

- did I mention a dull plot? And I normally love people fitting into the domesticity of their lives

I am loving this series. This one was different in that the cultural acceptance issues were all internalized on the heroine, not with the host culture. I can't say that I would have adjusted any better than she did, but it was a change from the other books were there were characters that were unaccepting of the newcomer. The level of thought put into how Mer-people work (at least these mer-people) and their environment was impressive.

I did wish Kayog had done the "oh we match you because of what is does for the Union (?)" speech like in the other books. I really wanted to know how the merfolk fit into the grand scheme of things. Was it the animal husbandry? It was never specifically spelled out.
