Loved the story ! I also appreciated the drawings at the end (although perhaps putting them at the beginning would be a better idea), they were very weel done while letting our own imagination give the attributes we appreciate individually.

I really enjoy this series but this one didn't do it as much for me. I loved the set-up, but it felt like the author wanted to write more of a sci-fi story with the FMC mutating into a different race than a romance. That said, I also missed some of the culture clash aspects that have made the other installments in this series so charming. The MMC came across as too perfect, too understanding. Both MCs had an informed flaw of being too analytical but it didn't seem to cause them any problems after the first 20 pages.

I read a review before going into this book that said the author put world building first and the romance plot second or third, and I find that to be really true here. The world was lush and the culture was fascinating, and so was her mutation process , but I found their romance to be pretty lackluster. They were cute enough, but I was much more invested in her story than THEIR story. The dialogue was also pretty weak, and I felt like everyone had the same voice. It was still a solid book and I don’t regret reading, but I’m not sure I’ll pick it up again.

I feel like this book was an excuse for Abel to write about this cool idea she had about the water-based alien planet of Triton. To me, it read more like a story about Triton than a romance.
I appreciate how creative Abel was about crafting what life was like on Triton and thinking about how Neera could adapt to this new world. She describes everything - how people on Triton dress, what they eat, wedding customs, mermaid anatomy, alien animal anatomy, and more. It seems like Abel spent a lot of time thinking about these different elements, and they did help immerse me into Triton.
This is the first alien romance I've read with a protagonist of colour which was very cool! Neera is of partial Indian descent and she sometimes refers to South Indian customs.
At the same time, I felt that this description took a lot of focus away from the actual romance itself. As a result, the romance didn't feel all that romantic, even though there were plenty of scenes (steamy and non-steamy) that had a lot of romance potential. The plot is mostly "Neera getting used to life on Triton" and the scenes largely show Neera and Echo doing just that. It didn't help that Echo and Neera's POVs sounded quite similar to me.
I love romances that have great world-building but I feel that the romance should fit into the world that's being built. In this case, it felt like the romance was an excuse for the author to explore the world. This wasn't my cup of tea but maybe it'll be yours?

A new twist
I liked the premise that she had to go to a new world because she was being poisoned by earth. The tension it created with finding a husband when she wasn’t looking for one, coupled with the uncertainty about her health condition (and the coping that comes as a result) made for a very intriguing read. Can’t wait to see what else this series has in store for us!
