this book is the equivalent of being at a party of close friends but getting stuck talking to one of your friends boyfriends for a really long time. and the conversation isn't necessarily that bad, but the entire time it's happening your friends are all giggling and laughing right next to you. i just felt like I could be reading so many other things and enjoying them more.

DID NOT FINISH

I didn't find any of the characters likable or even interesting or engaging, and I never really cared what was going to happen next. This book killed my reading streak-- it took me a month of picking it up and putting it back down to realize I was never going to get more than halfway through.

"Zdawał się być jednocześnie mroczny i roztargniony: typ człowieka, który najpierw z zapierającym dech chłodem odgadnie smutek skrywany na samym dnie twego serca, by chwilę później, machając ci radośnie na pożegnanie, wejść w szklane drzwi, rozcinając sobie policzek na dwadzieścia dwa szwy".

Lofciam.

*definitely* better than the mysteries of pittsburgh, though i liked the first half more than the second

I’ve always loved this movie and almost everything I’ve read by Chabon, so it’s a bit surprising it took me this long to get around to Wonder Boys. The movie cuts some scenes here and there that add some context and depth to both Grady and James’ character arcs, but nothing detrimental to the story. I enjoyed getting a little more time and scenery with these characters, and was surprised at some changes between the two final products as well. Missed you, Oola.

Current favourite book. Genius!

I was a big fan of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. This however, was a little more drawn on, and ironically, self-aware of the fact in Grady's plight for good writing. Wonder Boys is not the best by Chabon, but definitely it is full of some beautiful, poetic language.

If your goal is to stay away from books that center around men being reckless and screwing over innocent women, keep this off your to-read list.
