Very interesting analysis of the concept of pity in all its forms. I wish there had been less yapping at points, but the overall story was quite engaging. The MC's reactions to certain events did strike me as exaggerated, but the book talks about performative masculinity and even the shame of being "too friendly" (wink) with other men, something I cannot relate to, as I'm not a military cis man in 1914.

The way disabled characters talked about themselves was quite self-deprecating, which I don't think it's a very accurate representation, sadly. I think however that the female characters were well-written, especially Edith. She was a messy bitch so I have to stan, I fear.

the beginning this book was very slow. it’s not that i didn’t enjoy it, i just had a hard time focusing as it was moving so slow. by the half way point (a little under that) i was finally entertained but then i got lost again. i was genuinely going to rate this 3.5/3 stars if it wasn’t for the fact that i cried like a baby at the end. i hadn’t realized just how connected i had gotten to the characters until the end. if your experience reading this book is anything like mine, you won’t realize just how impactful and emotional this book is until yourreflect on the events that lead to the ending of the story. Throughout the book, i laughed at the characters stupidity and idiotic decisions. I liked how i could relate to some of the
lines ,moments, etc. it wasn’t until the end that i realized just how amazing this book really was. In conclusion, stick it out till the end, it’s worth it.
