We pick up immediately after book 1. Malakai and Ophelia attempt to deal with their time apart and the people created by that distance. Ophelia tries to understand her new role and how to best protect their people in the future. I struggled with the pacing a bit in the first half of the book. It felt like not much happened in comparison to the second half. We get some clarity of the bigger picture at the end, but I would have liked more info along the way. I enjoyed the side characters and want more from Malakai and Tolek. I tend to struggle with Ophelia and hope that the ending will push her towards some growth. She could do with some dating detox.

If book 1 was like getting punched in the gut, this one is having the life choked out of you... and then learning that you actually didn’t need the air.
It’s crazypants to me that every single new book I read is my favorite but… how do you read this book and it’s NOT your favorite? This book deals with the aftermath of book 1-
And folks if you haven’t had a good ugly cry in a while, this book has the scenes for you. But the good news? You can then pick up the pieces right along with Our MCs as they’re getting it figured the fuck out.
They didn't break up because someone cheated or there wasn't love there anymore- they broke up because they were toxic, and holding each other back from the healing surrounding the events in book 1. I've had breakups like that- they hurt. Everywhere and all over.
But then you get to come out on the other side, and find yourself more resilient.

It's insane how on different pages Ophelia and Malakai are- and understandably.
