I’ve been that kind of reading slump lately where I start a book then DNF it early on merely because one small thing annoyed me. I can’t tell you how many times this has happened in the last few months but it was enough that I was terribly annoyed with myself. So I was a bit surprised to find I was enjoying this story from the first chapter and I FINALLY didn’t feel the need to ditch it for arbitrary reasons.

Yes, this is a story about loss and grief, both large and small, but it’s also a story about hope. I guess it was something I needed to read right now and it nourished a small part of me. I can’t quantify that in a review, I just know how it made me feel. And in the end, there was joy.

Slow-paced and repetitive, I wanted so much more from this book. Napolitano’s writing—filled with convoluted metaphors and similes, and a constant present-tense that doesn’t have the effect I think it’s meant to have—doesn’t work for me. Her many characters (especially those on the plane) are 2-dimensional and stereotypical. An intriguing premise, but a story that is ultimately unsatisfying and disappointing.

O Edwardovi by mělo vědět mnohem více čtenářů.

A survival story from the perspective of a teenage boy who loses everything during a flight to LA from NY.

Eddie is on a flight with his brother, dad, and mom to support his mom’s new career change. During the flight, we’re introduced to a handful of other characters and their plans once they get to LA. Except they don’t make it.

Edward is the only survivor of the crash. Leaving behind his Eddie persona and moving in with his aunt and uncle. The book alternates between his process of grief while finding solace with his new neighbor and school , as well as the last hours of those on the plane.

This book was wonderfully written and dealt with the complexity of how people handle grief differently, and how it can feel all consuming at times, even if it isn’t at the forefront of our minds. Whether it’s avoiding reality, staying stuck in the moment, reaching out to strangers who can relate, or asking survivors to live in honor of those who don’t make it - grief is one of those human emotions that is more tangible than you realize.
