Wow this is good- he lived such a tortured life defending the things he really believed in. It made me cry about 10 times, partly due to the beauty and the pain expressed, but also partly due to the book being 750 pages long. It inspires a real belief in grassroots social movements.

Mandela truly had an incredible life filled with humility and fierce love for the people of South Africa. It comes across throughout the book. An unforgettable read.

A great intro to the apartheid era
I learned a great deal about recent South African history. There were a few too many “shout outs” to his colleagues and acknowledgements of the others roles, which slowed the narrative, so I had to skip over the lists of names he chose to recognize throughout the book. Otherwise very interesting.

It starts off at a snail's pace and the first third is a bit of a drag. But if you can plow through the first third of the book, its a great read till the end. Mr. Mandela was honest and showed a human side of his personality that tends to be overshadowed by his larger than life persona created by the popular literature and media.
