I felt this book was tech heavy…probably great for engineers and tech people. Much of the jargon was over my head. It felt like such a stereotypical “dad” book…something I’d recommend or gift to an older male figure. I enjoyed the Jon/Allison story but didn’t feel invested in Colter’s. I felt like I crawled through this book. The pro was the big twist - totally got me and I didn’t see it coming!! But I just don’t think this book was for me.
Thanks NetGalley for the early read!

I was assured that this was a good, exciting book and it is. The author's voice of this book and that of the previous Colter Shaw works is remarkably different. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Deaver and Shaw focus on only one case. Shaw seems more human in this book rather than a mere walking, talking skill set.

Turns out only Shaw and Hannah are who they appear to be. I've not come across such ambiguous characters since James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux.

Deaver exploits his talent for entangled skeins of plots and his characters' abilities to avoid / survive death or dismemberment, always at the of the chapters. Should I ever have the misfortune of being shot, I hope I handle it with as much aplomb as Alli.

Brilliant! I am a big fan of Deaver and I think this is one of his best Colter Shaw books. Rather than focusing on Colter's personal circumstances, he is involved with a different case.
This reminds me of some of my favourite Lincoln Rhyme books where the characters are interesting and the plot has twists and turns!
