the plot felt a little slow, the romance was OK, i liked the set up & how their dynamic was at the start but it shifted too quickly to non-enemies in my opinion. takeshi's character switched up too fast & became too soft, allowing the fmc to get away with way too much but i still liked him thorought the book and i'm glad he switched sides. i like the twist at the end and hope the 2nd book is a little bit better.

I really wanted to like this. I’ve heard so many good things about it. Unfortunately this was not for me.
I read and I read but it brought up no feelings in me besides fear for getting into a slump.
I think I just couldn’t connect to the FMC. She didn’t hold my interest and I really didn’t care what would happen to her.

Ughhhhhhh. So good. FMC (Kahlani Kanes) and MMC (Capt. Takeshi Steele).  Post apocalyptic.  The prisoners live in a....underground - underground prison.  The upper class live in luxury underground but above the prison.  Kanes is thrown in prison because she had possession of a book of poetry.  Steele is the tough as nails, no nonsense captain of the guards.  It's an extraordinarily slow burn romance.  The highlight is when they are laying in the same bed together and their pinkies touch.  But I gotta say, that little touch was sooooo good.  The book ends with a cliffhanger.  Steele and Kanes are leading a group to the outside world to get to another underground prison.  (All because they found out that the citizens, both imprisoned and "free" are about to be starved to death by the government...oh yeah, turns out the governor/mayor was a robot.) Can't wait to read the next book.

Couldn’t get into the story
