Nostalgic dystopian. Had me hooked.
Enemies to lovers—drawn out a little with the miscommunication trope and FMC willfull blindness to MMC intentions. Which grew a little frustrating and came across more as a way to prolong the inevitable rather than meaningful tension/conflict.
Some of the references to America and current world tech etc made it a little corny & America-centric.
I think some of the grit was missing, I can understand the found family dynamic but I think we missed the build/meaningful interactions to feel connected to the side characters —showing not telling.
Either way, still devoured this and the sequel, keen for the next.

This book had SO much potential. This first chapter popped off hard and was giving red rising mixed with a tiny bit of 1984. But every chapter after that really flopped.

Like why was owning a book enough to imprison her? Was it the type of book? Was it books in general? What was the purpose of her friend giving it to her? What was the result of it being found in her possession (asides from her being imprisoned)? Why did that book matter?

None of this was answered and the stolen(?) book basically didn't matter for the rest of this book. Maybe it wasn’t the book but it was the concept of knowledge but I just felt all of this plot went immediately in the bin the following chapter. In the end this book felt like a good plot turned TikTok book to please the readers. I genuinely have nothing else good to say. The romance was instant connection, there were no deeper levels portrayed in the male main character and the sex scene was so unnecessary and added NOTHING. The main character was constantly portrayed as this weak naive child who constantly needed protection and I'm sorry but i need a little backbone in my characters.

This could have been cool but it wasn’t. I’m not even barely tempted into reading the next book.
