Dystopic sci-fi - expected more in the character development and relationships given the hype. Solid read but not likely to recommend to others.

This was interesting, but it left more questions than answers. Like not even a little hint? The enemies to lovers had all the angst and heartbreak but, I needed more. I don’t know maybe I’ll come back to this maybe not.

The writing however the concepts of overcoming oppression, rising underdog and beating a corrupt system are on point especially in today’s day and climate. This is definitely a book that would be banned and for that alone, a must read.

"That's the beauty of knowledge. If it's remembered, the meaning can't be fully erased."

*No Spoilers*

Patton truly did the dystopia genre justice, and I have a feeling this will become a genre staple. Although the significance of poetry was a constant theme, it was incorporated seamlessly and felt evocative rather than performative.
The chemistry between Tekashi and Khalani is interesting, but the overarching plot of Khalani searching for hope and freedom is what makes this book impossible to put down. The foreshadowing to the plot twist at the end makes me wonder what else is in store for this group.

I can't wait to start the second book in the series, Us Deadly Few.

🌶️ not in book one

First let me say I am a simple woman you tell me an MMC is tall, built like a brick wall, has an unhinged look about him, has captain before his name and is inspired by Toji Fushiguro… I’m reading it ZERO QUESTIONS ASKED.

I’m delighted to tell you it was also really good out side of the MMC.

Post nuclear/ radiation earth and everyone is forced to live underground and the elite live in  a dome. The arts are banned and so is being kind or having an independent thought basically.

The FMC is sentenced to life in prison after she is caught with a banned poetry book.

In prison it sucks but also she learns, hope, perseverance, love and TWO government conspiracies.

I loved how the author wove the plot in with the other prisoners as well as a slow burn romance with a prison guard that didn’t feel too outlandish. (It’s fictional ok we can have some fun)

This book also had an important message about the power of creativity tucked into a fast paced engaging plot.

  • dystopian
  • Prisoner x prison guard
  • Training
  • Slllloooowwww burrrnnnn they pinky touch at 67% in. It’s a multi book build romance here.
  • Found family
  • Government conspiracies

Bonus points it’s under 350 pages.

This book sits on a 4.5 ⭐️ I for very petty reasons couldn’t give it a full five because there’s poetry in this and I’m sorry I can’t take it seriously. That’s a me thing I know but it’s my revifew.

The plot was interesting enough to keep me reading, but I hate the miscommunication trope in books. After reading the second book I’m not sure I’d recommend.
