city of ember but with more brooding and murder
DNF'd at like 40% when I remembered I'd rather not waste my time on mediocre books.
There were some half decent aspects of the book but mostly not. She tries to use like dark poetic language but most of the time it just doesn't work because it's coming from a 19year old girl so it sounds so forced and out of place or just made me roll my eyes more than anything. I also hated how her and Takeshi's relationship was developing, it was too unrealistic, predictable, and Wattpad.
Here are some quotes I hated:
“When have you ever known me to listen?” Serene derided. “You’re a part of the female species. So never."
- uhhhh what
No one had cared about her well-being or got close enough to worry, not since Douglas died.
- girl wasn't that like a month ago
“I’m sorry, Serene. But it’s better this way. People who get close to me, they always get hurt. That’s what I do. I hurt people. And this time…I’d rather just let it be me.”
- bitch she just asked how you got that cut on your arm
and many more that I didn't record :)

Very interesting, love the setting and the slow burn. The poems and deep monologues aren’t for me, but very cool nonetheless

I hope this author continues to write and grow as a storyteller. That said, I felt the book could have used some editing. The dialogue was not believable and there were words used incorrectly - for me stuff like that is jarring and I feel like I’m reading someone’s fan fiction.
I was initially suggested this book for the “romance / spice” element, but it was pretty nonexistent (trying to be disguised as tension) when really the relationship between the characters wasn’t all that deep (again, the dialogue was cringey and hard to read).
