I really liked the idea behind this book. The post-apocalyptic setting is amazing, and totally gave me 'The 100' vibes. However, there were some inconsistencies in the plot and the two main characters didn't really convince me of their chemistry. I really wanted to love this story but I always ended up questioning things, so sadly I had to rate it low.
The first thing that bothered me was, why would they ask for more prisoners only to kill half of them a few weeks later, because of dwindling food supplies. Especially because you learn that the reigning powers were informed about that problem for a while. So either they have a really stupid government, or the explanation that more prisoners were needed was only an excuse to get the fmc into the prison.
Secondly, how would the fmc build musclein training, when it's been made very clear that the prisoners are starving, sometimes not eating for a day and the fmc lost a huge amount of weight in her first days of being imprisoned. I normally love the training trope but I was always questioning how she wouldn't be too exhausted to train let alone be able to build muscle when she's obviously very malnourished. I also just didn't feel the connection between the fmc and the mmc and so it ended up feeling rushed to me. Another question for me was why would the characters need to go to Hermes when they have the same food problems? Yes, they have a resistance group there, but we don't even know if that group is successful. Also, first the characters wanted to warn/save everyone from starving only to turn around and just decide to leave without letting anyone else know about the secrets the gouvernment is keeping.
Lastly, why was the president so interested in the fmc? Especially knowing in the end that he was a machine, it didn't make sense for him to get close to her so that it feels to me like this was only a device to develop the story.
All in all, I just had too many questions for the story to make sense to me and so despite the really good worldbuilding, I just didn't enjoy the book the way I wanted to.

Writing style wasn't to my liking, I found the descriptions to be naively drawn out which felt weak and caused the book to drag. A shame, it had promise.

“If you ever think, ‘the government wouldn’t do this, yes they would.’ ”
The frick. What did Alex Patton put in this. This was really good and I hate dystopian books and poetry-but I ATE this up two of the things I hate the most in literature and i AT THIS UP. This is by far the best balance between plot and romance, it was perfect it wasn’t too much lovey dovey. The angst, the corruption, the political unrest, ugh it was done so good; the moral compasses were definitely lost after they hit a certain depth, but for some reason you can understand all characters. I’ve never felt so hopeless and hopeful in a book, I thoroughly enjoyed this with my whole being I really hope the second book is just as good, I hate when people say books aren’t political, because books like THIS exist- there are so many issues in this book that are reflected in real life ughh alexxxxx. ALSO THE WORLD IS SO PHENOMENAL I LITERALLY SKIPPED A BEAT WHEN THEY SAID IT WAS CALLED GENESIS IT FEELS ETHEREAL. I genuinely feel like this deserves hype.

Alexis Patton is a wordsmith. In her acknowledgments she says every sentence has a meaning and you really feel the weight of each sentence throughout the book. The premise of the book really suits Patton's writing style and lends itself to the readers connection to the beauty of expression, be it writing or art.
Only marked down because sometimes this could be slightly tedious however the premise of the book completely calls for it.
Also little heads up that this is written in third person which, if you're like me can be a bit of a harder read.
