Thanks to NetGalley & Avon and Harper Voyager for the copy in exchange for an honest review. Sadly, I DNF'ed at 20% of the way through.
The protagonist was so meek and sad, she was just depressing to read. I would've rooted for her but she had no strength in her. The writing was very...young adult-ish, lots of telling and not showing. Even in the timeskip she still feels placid.
No offense but I'm kind of surprised this is listed as Adult. It reads like a YA book and not really in a good way. The imaginary friend was just obsessed with her and I was just like, but why? She has no redeeming qualities.
"I like you because you're the worst of the worst."
That is a FUN line but makes no sense in the story! Girl hasn't done anything except be sad about her mom! Now, if she went full murder spree and bloodthirsty, I would've liked this book way better. At least then she would've been doing *something* instead of the story carting her around.

Stop writing helpless, perfect women!! Let her choose to kill someone! Make her worse!!!
House of the Beast is a hauntingly beautiful dark fantasy that blends lyrical prose with stunning illustrations by author-artist Michelle Wong. The story of Alma, a bastard daughter bound to a death god in her quest for vengeance, is rich with atmosphere, emotion, and eerie romantic tension. Wong’s writing is poetic and immersive, while her drawings elevate key moments with haunting elegance. Though the pacing lags slightly in places, the overall experience is captivating, making this a memorable debut for fans of gothic fantasy and tragic heroines.

I haven’t been so sucked into a narrative so quickly in a hot sec!
The characters and their decisions had me flipping pages (complimentary) and the plot was pretty well honed at well.
One character’s development in particular had me gobsmacked!
Will eagerly recommend to those who like morally grey characters, immersive world building, and personifications of death.

I decided to stop reading because the plot was moving really slowly - too much telling, plus the flowery language just wasn't my cuppa tea. I was there for the female rage and revenge story, but MC is a typical romantasy heroine, weak and needing constant reassurance from the male love interest. While I found the idea of the world interesting, it couldn't make up for the lackluster MC and the rest of the cardboard cast of characters. The last thing I listened to was the MC fight with the only other female character her age about which of them was the most oppressed. I got exasperated a lot about the MC's views, which seemed overly ignorant and unobservant given what we've read about her life thus far.
Just before this point I also thought about quitting at the part where the MC talks about how disgusting her 'deformity' is, and how she doesn't think the love interest (who let's not forget is the 'dread beast' an elder god who is not human and who lives in a realm that causes people to lose their sanity) would want to touch her 'disgusting' amputated limb. It was disturbingly ableist.
