The writing is truly terrible. At least half of the paragraphs are simply restatements of the previous paragraph, as though the author wrote out the concept in different ways and for some reason never deleted the drafts. Every other word is “f*ck” as though the author thinks that makes up for a lack of creative dialogue. There are several times where the ridiculousness of what is written fully rips you out of the book. The is almost no plot for the first 90% of the book, and each scene is just another setting up for more sex. Definitely read the content warnings. None of the periphery or side characters develop a personality until the end of the book, when you kind of think you may eventually like one or two of them. I almost dnf’d several times, but other reviews insisted it was worth slogging through to the end.

Despite all of this, the last 10% of the book finally remembers that plot is a thing and sweeps you up into an actual story. I will read the second one, but with the lowest possible expectations.

2.5

BIG DISCLAIMER: this book starts with a disclaimer from the author. Take it seriously.

This book was not my cup of tea, and I honestly feel sick having finished it, but I'm rating it on writing, not my personal opinion so it's 2.5 stars. The plot is nuts, not super well put together, and the Knox sections were confusing and I skipped most of them. Also, I'm not a prude about cussing in books, I'm all for it, but my head ached trying to read 3 f***s in one sentence. To anyone who thinks Crescent City had too much cussing, this is not the book for you!

I won't be finishing the series, I'm shocked I pushed through to finish it at all.

TW: rape, sexual assault, murder, child death, miscarriage, misogyny, sexism, violence
