at first i thought my expectations had been too high, but the truth is this was just unfortunately bad; and the problem isn’t that i disliked some of the stories — the problem is i actively Hated most and only liked one (three, but not entirely).

i also find it silly to shove this anthology under the dark academia umbrella since i would barely call some of the stories dimly lit circuses, let alone dark academia.

alas, love and light, kelly andrew, you’re the only real one

I picked this book up bc I wanted a taste of some new authors, specifically authors in the dark academia genre…unfortunately, I came away liking the stories from authors I was already familiar with best. 🫠

Favorites:
“Pythia” by Olivie Blake
“Playing” by Phoebe Wynne (new to me!)
“ The Hare and the Hound” by Kelly Andrew

I tend to find that anthologies are great but can also be filled with hits and misses, not saying that any of the stories were bad, just that with some outstanding ones the ones that lacked that were quite obvious. I loved a few and some I found myself disappointed in but I think it’s due to the fact that putting the same genre or groupings together it can become a bit tedious. Having said that, I did love the dark, shady and somewhat macabre elements that shone through most of these works. Overall this is definitely a worthy edition to my bookshelves.

Let me tell you, the SECOND I saw Olivie Blake had a short story in this anthology I was SOLD.

‘In These Hallowed Halls’ is a dark academia short story collection from various authors and it was honestly such a fun ride!

With any collections like this, you always find there are some that are more standout than others, which, was also the case here - most notably for me - Pythia by Olivie Blake, The Hare and the Hound by Kelly Andrew and The Professor of Ontography by Helen Grant were my standout favourites.

However, there wasn’t any I didn’t enjoy! I loved the dark academia vibes throughout (and the different takes on what this is!) and the writing styles of all the authors was very enjoyable and I’ll be certainly checking out some more published works by the authors. If dark academia is your thing, you’re going to love this!

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
