I knew better than to pick up historical fiction, which is absolutely not my genre, but it was a hand-me-down from a friend so I gave it a shot.
Also, Carey's writing style just isn't for me.

Unique characters and perspective on history make this a good read. I enjoyed the dialogue between the characters. The first part of this book had me in tears--when that happens you know the character development and writing is on point.

“I came to know Doctor Mesmer, not in person, but in wax. He had a very flat face with almost no profile at all, as if it had been grown facedown in a skillet.”
