Borges and Me

The writing was fantastic! Although, I couldn't tell whether the author thought Borges was annoying, crazy old man or inspiring writer to admire. I felt he went back and forth while they were in Scotland.

What a charming read! Borges is like a manic pixie dream blind literary icon and his road trip with the author is vivid and lush and I felt like my life changed right along with the young author. (My life didn't actually change but the writing was powerful enough that it felt like it could for a minute.)

It's a book full of literary fellas and I was not surprised to learn after I finished it that the women had been fictionalized and consolidated. They did have the flavor of being a sort of fantasy and not quite quite real. But the landscape was evocative and the company delightful.

This is a gift to all Borges fans. A must read even for those who don’t know Borges at all

Borges is absolutely delightful. The scenes between the author and Borges were a joy to read, as the author did a great job of portraying Borges as lively and showing how Borges changes him as their interactions progress.

Beyond that, parts of the book dragged for me. The romance specifically, I wasn't invested in it at all.

I did enjoy getting to see a time I didn't live through (the Vietnam war) and I perspective I've never had (dealing with registering or being a part of the draft) as well.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The groovy cover and the promise of firsthand travels-with-Borges anecdotes were catnip enough for me to give this book a try. Alas (and especially since Parini is also a poet), I was disappointed by its prosaic prose. Maybe my expectations were unrealistic, but Borges and Me stays earthbound in ways Borges never would, let alone tolerate.

I wish I read something by Borges instead.
