The slow horses are being targeted by the Russians in the mistaken belief that they're the Service's crack assassin squad. Diana Taverner has got into bed with Peter Judd and his cronies. Jackson Lamb is as enjoyably unpleasant and stealthily lethal as ever.

So all the elements of a cracking Slow Horse novel are there, but maybe the formula is just getting stale or maybe this one just didn't seem to have as much there there as previous Slow Horse outings, but for whatever reasons I just didn't enjoy it as much. There's a lot of set up before the main plot kicked in (but that's also been the case with other books in the series) and it seemed to get wrapped up pretty quickly, albeit with an extended tie up of loose ends. Personally I could also do without a slushy romance between joes - that's not what I'm here for but that's just a minor grumble.

So it overall it was fine but I'm feeling a bit trepidatious about approaching the last book (so far) in the series and will perhaps give it a rest for a while before dipping back in.
