The story had some predictable plot lines- but what kept me enthralled was unraveling how the plots lines concluded.
I would say this books is good for later teens (16-19) and new adult readers. The Main characters are in their 20’s, but it’s not spicy. Romance is a subplot more then a focus.
[Edit]- adding this blurb I texted my boyfriend: “I finished that a while ago 🤣 I started a new book at like 1030 last night and just finished it. It's called "defy the night" it was rather good, a bit predictable, new adult but writen young adult so it was an easy read. No smut sadly... the main characters did get TWO kisses!!! I know so scandalous. I would best describe it as "a dystopian meeting a political thriller meeting the pandemic meeting Disney's version of Rapunzel." “

Brigid Kemmerer is an author that I have discovered that I will read every book she writes. I love the way that Brigid writes and creates a storyline and characters. The characters she creates are so complex and detailed that I instantly fall in love with her writing style.
From the moment I started this book (audiobook) I loved everything about the plot. Tessa (the fmc) was bold and daring. Corrick (the mmc) was the first morally grey character that I felt for and related to. Harristan, the unmoving traumatised king was ruthless, but heartfelt. I loved everything about the storyline.
I listened to this book every moment that I could, whilst commuting to work, whilst doing the weekly shop. I audibly gasped in the supermarket when we discovered that Wes was Corrick in disguise.
The twists, the turns, the plot, was *chef’s kiss*. The narration by Christopher Ragland and Lexie McDougall was incredible and made the story come to life even more so.
A 4.25⭐️ for me, and looking forward to continuing the series.

The story had a really interesting premise, I just couldn’t help, but feel like there could have been more? Certain things seemed very obvious to me and not in a way that made me happy as the reader to figure out, more in a way that made me sad it was that easy to figure out?
Maybe this book just wasn’t for me, or maybe I’ve been reading toooo much to the point I know basic book structure now?
Either way it was good, I might read again in the future to see if my opinion changes.

In this world where sickness rules the land, 2 outlaws do what they can to keep the people safe however in their attempt to keep the people from death secrets, betrayal, politics, love and so much more is also at play.
This story definitely delivered on the world building and the need to know more.
