I remember reading Jeanette Winterson’s ‘Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit’ when I was 16 or 17 ✨ I never realised, though, the impact it had on Winterson’s life and how almost autobiographical it was! 😳 This book was bold and brave; I felt pangs of pain throughout as she relived her trauma and discussed the terrible things she endured during her childhood.
Her finding Ann (her birth mother) was harrowing in the sense of her having to delve into loss and pain again, but was also heartwarming ❤️ I loved reading about Ann because you could tell Winterson loved her in a different way!
For anyone who’s ever enjoyed ‘Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit’, this is a must! I was in awe after 🏳️‍🌈
