How this bok can go from being utterly irreverent and jokey to making me tear up from emotions in a single page is something I still can't say for sure.

I had an awesome time listening to this book - the characters were so much fun! It was ridiculous, over the top, and kind of half-serious/half-parody fantasy, and usually I'm not a fan of that kind of humor, but in this case I enjoyed the heck out of it. I listened to it mostly in public, and I can't count the number of times I burst out laughing in the middle of a crowd. I'm getting used to the weird looks.
That said, I don't think I would have liked it so much had I just read the book, or had the narrator not been Michael Lesley.
I used to think I'm not a fan of TJ Klune. I could read his books when the right mood struck, but 95% of the time it was too much angst or too OTT for me - but this year I discovered I love his books when I listen to them. I can say with certainty that had I read this book, I would have probably DNFed it, so I'm really glad I chose to listen to it instead.
And Michael Lesley - that man is a narration god! I don't think I've ever listened to a better overall narration. Granted, my experience with audiobooks is humble, but judging by all the other audio reviews, the awesomeness of this narration is pretty much a fact.

Laugh Out Loud funny. Sure to outrage the homophobes and easily offended. But if you aren't those things this book Will entertain you. I love the depiction of the kingdom and the times. The love story? Is outrageous and the buddy story also hilarious. Just for fun read this book.

If you don't like T.J. Klune's humor, you won't like this book. It's a lot! However, I think he's hysterical and he can also write emotional scenes that make me cry.

It's cute, very jokey
Ok, i like tj klune. I really liked"bear, otter and the kid", because i was really invested in bear and otters relationship. But klune has a tendency to, how do i explain this, run a joke into the ground. He's funny, don't get me wrong. But instead of working the joke for 3 beats he always aims for 7. He keeps it up until it's no longer funny and it's become annoying and unrealistic . I've only read 4 of his books but he really pushes the limit on how long something can be fresh and funny in this book the most
Also, there is really only one sex scene in the book, at the very end. Yes it is written pretty hot, but at that point i really didn't think of Sam as a sexual man, it was more like reading about a care bear or a cabbage patch kid fucking. It felt akward.

It was a reread for me (from before the time I logged my reads) and I honestly didn't remember it being that bad. "Rapey eyes"? Really?

Well this book was quite hilarious.
The plot has been told a million times. The chosen one that started from poor upbringings to find out that he's magical. He moves to the palace to train with a wizard and he finds out he's a part of some super badass prophecy.
What makes it funny is that his best friend is a gay unicorn and half giant.
Everyone in the book wants to sleep with him.
And he's sassy and curses like a sailor.
Not to mention he's in love with the Prince of the Kingdom's boyfriend. The Knight!
I want to share funny quotes but that would be the entire book.
The only downside is that I actually wish that it was more serious. I like a little angst.
3.5 stars!

I really love TJ Klune, but this book falls kind of into a territory I don't resonate with as much as some of his other stuff. It's not bad, like it's still a very good example of what it's trying to be and it's still compulsively readable. But instead of reaffirming everything good and amazing in the world, it made me squirm a little. Smile, but squirm. It's very open about everything and for me it lands just on the wrong side of uncomfortable. If you've ever cuddled with a partner when it's just a little too warm outside, and not wanted to let go because you love them and they are everything and of course you want to hold them, even though the heat is too much and you're actually not really that comfortable, you'll have an idea of how I felt reading thing. Happy, appreciative, loving even. But maybe also with a tiny desire for it to end soon.
The side characters are predictably quirky and hilarious. The main character felt very much like the lead of the Extradordinaries series by the same author-- if you read that and enjoyed it, this will read much the same. Another contemporary would be "So This Is Every After" by F.T. Lukens-- the main character in that one has a different vibe, but overall the books feel very much the same. All good books. All just a little different in tone than I prefer. If you're young or a bit more open or just have different tastes, you will probably find this book and those others even better than I did.
