Ever wonder what would happen if you lived in a fantasy world, and your town suddenly became a tourist attraction because there was a dungeon nearby? While this book has some lighthearted answers to that question, it also explores the idea of what happens to a community that suddenly shifts to becoming a service-oriented economy, as well as seeing the locals interacting with others making lots of gold off of their town, with only some of that gold trickling back to the locals.

I loved the world building in Delver. There is this giant, ever-changing Dungeon spread throughout the world, and an entrance shows up in a remote village. A lot of this book examines what happens to this village as adventurers flock to a new opportunity to enter Dungeon. It will appeal more to people that are familiar to D&D, I think, because it of the large emphasis on Dungeon and the adventurers that seem to be drawn from that game. Delver also tracks the life of one young woman that lives in this village as she aspires to be an adventurer herself.

The art is decent. If you're used to more mainstream comics, then it might be jarring to read this book because it isn't quite as polished. That's okay though. I think the art does a good job in serving the story. I would be interested in reading more of this series.

In Oddgoat, a small, out of the way village, a gate to a living dungeon opens in a cold house. While the villagers try to figure out what to do about it, a couple of delvers (basically dungeon divers) come out of the gate. As word gets out, more delvers come, until the village and the surrounding land start to become overwhelmed. Some of the villagers adapt as they can, including Temerity (Merit for short), who sets up a food stall with her family, but some move away. Soon, Merit and other locals are being pushed out of the market that's sprung up by more experienced merchants, and Merit decides to become a delver herself- might as well get a piece of the pie, right? She trains briefly with a delver, then teams up with Clem, another newbie who can use magic, and they set out to explore the dungeon a bit, meaning to just take a quick look. Things go badly, and they become lost, then separated. They each learn some hard lessons, and when they find each other again, how will they find their way out? And what will they find when they emerge in Oddgoat once again?
I enjoyed the story a lot. It was interesting getting the perspective of the people affected by the dungeon's appearance (something I haven't really come across in the RPGs I've played), and feeling the gut punch Merit feels upon realizing she was stupid and completely unprepared to enter the dungeon without knowing more about it was visceral. I'm interested to see what happens next, and I'll be looking for the next volume!
