Although at some parts heartbreaking, I really enjoyed this book. I found it very interesting to see the sometimes blurred lines of religion eg. Christianity melded with Paganism.

An all time favourite. I had to force myself to stop reading in order to no finish too quickly. It carries you to a strange world full of superstition; sprites, spirits, demons. And harried by violence, which haunts those still living and remains an ever present threat. Set after a pogrom, it permeates everything. Strangers meeting exchange pleasantries and then discuss how they survived, what was done to them, who they lost, etc. Jacob shivers at the sight of a child. People try to push away the question of how God can permit such violence; it shakes their faith too much. Yet it is not despairing, life continues, moments are found for love, the book stops for descriptions of landscapes and how light is strained through branches a pine needles ‘like a sieve’. And this is just the setting!
