Shakespeare you dirty, dirty boy. Crude, vulgar, and so much fun, Romeo and Juliet is nothing like the love story we like to imagine. Still a fun read, even if it is nothing like the story I thought it was. Rediscovering these characters as they really are was a lot of fun.
Everyone's insane and fucking dramatic. If it wasn't in the old English, the insanity might have even been enjoyable.
Read it for a second time, finally in printed text, because anything Shakespeare in audiobook format is dreadful. Anyhow, I was able to focus on the centuries old text (and questioned why has no one written or made popular a version where it's understandable?!). It's still a dumb plot though. The romance makes no sense, since they just met, and they are just sooo dramatic. Maybe I'd genuinely find it interesting if it was shortened + written in coherent English for a 21st century reader, but until then - meh.
Also, it surprised me that this is read in schools even though it has multiple references to rape.
ALSO, I read the introduction, where it says: "Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet helped the modern view to triumph over the older view, which was that the choice of partners should (at least among the well-to-do) be made by the older members of the families concerned."
So, the play was a sort of cornerstone for marriages to be based on romance not on commodity. However, nowadays, it's not quite as important an issue and loving relationships are an expectation in our society, therefore this play just doesn't have the same impact it had centuries ago.

This was so good! I liked it way better than I expected to. It’s quick, full of interesting characters and of course very romantic.
I took a Shakespeare class in college and I cannot think about Romeo and Juliet without thinking of my professor going on a tangent of how much she hates Shakespeare for being a hack but it's also the reason she loves him.
