I found this book difficult to read as I felt no connection to the protagonist. In fact I found him incredibly unlikable, and dull. Sometimes you can get a protagonist you love to hate but not here.
The prose wasn’t easy to connect to, with long rambling thoughts.
Everything seems to happen to this man- storms at sea, pirates, shipwrecks, wolf attacks. Luck seems to be on his side..
I appreciate this was written at a different time but it smacks of colonial ideology, and that makes it an unpleasant read for me.
I know this is credited as the first novel, and lead a genre of survivalist/castaway books but I struggled to finish it (if it wasn’t a book club read it would be on the DNF pile.) not sure who would be compelled to read the additional Robinson Crusoe tales after this…

I appreciate that this was the "first novel", but the prose was so monotone. It was a struggle to study this at university and write an essay on this.

Very slow...
I read an abridged version. It was still a lot of text for a small amount of plot. I am usually able to appreciate a book with a more leisurely pace, but the descriptions in this one weren't really fascinating or gripping, they were mostly just mundane and repetitive. Also, the relentless moralizing began to grate a few pages in.

The story is good. The adaptation is also good. I like to read the original version too.
This is perhaps the most boring, snobbishly written book I've read this year, interfused with colonial ideas and religious rambling, not to mention the Constant Obsession with Capitalising Every Third Damn Word in the Book! It's the first book in a long time which has made me not want to continue reading it (though I flipped at least through the rest before closing it shut).
