This book took so much of my brain power. So many little details, and so many little twists that were a slow spiral downwards. The plot was genius, but I didn’t like most of the characters.
Tana French can write. There is no doubt about that but this book is a huge departure from her Murder Squad books and it just drags on and on. If I hadn't already read more than half the book before I realized that I wasn't the least bit interested in any of it, I probably wouldn't have finished it. I didn't like any of the characters. Did I mention that this one dragged on and on? It did.
It was just so slow moving for the first 300 pages. And also, I may be biased because I don't think anything she's done since The Likeness have been as good.
Kind of dragged on, especially after you get to “climax” there’s an extra event towards the end that seems unnecessary. Was glad when this was finished.
This was a classic Tana French novel, in that it reveals ALL the thoughts and feelings, and actions, of humans at their worst. The things we can do and say to each other that are just nasty and terrible.
This is the complicated story of Toby, deemed one of the luckiest people anyone has ever known. A confidence exudes from him that he can talk his way out of anything. After a night with the boys, he goes home and his house is burgled, and he is hurt a lot. He recovers at his uncle's home, after his uncle has had a diagnosis of untreatable brain cancer. One day while the family is gathered around, a body is discovered in the Witch Elm in the yard. After Toby's attack his memory is very messed up, and he begins to think that perhaps he killed the man in the tree--an old friend from school. What unfolds is his attempt to get his life back, and discover the truth...although not without consequences.
I enjoyed this diversion from the Dublin Murder Squad, and will continue to greedily consume any more books by her.
