Tana French

3.52 AVERAGE

This book is a meditation on privilege (masquerading as “luck”), a view into how small evils morph into huge ones, and a glimpse into the inner life of someone with TBI and PTSD. The hollowing out of a soul. Hard read.

3.5 rounded to a 4 for merit!

With a string story full of angst, injustice and transcendental ruminations on how well we know ourselves, the VERY strong mystery almost got lost. However, Tana was able to bring me around at the end to a typically unsatisfying, but very human, ending.

It took a while for the action to start but once it did, it was riveting. Then again, perhaps the slow build up helped with the character development

Wow. I couldn't stop listening. A little disappointed by the end, but a really good read!!

Love Tana French's mysteries in general, but this one just didn't work for me. Somewhere in the middle I got annoyed at the protagonist and ended the book with very mixed feelings (it's a bit of a downer). I don't regret reading it, since French's characterization and insight into psyche is always excellent, but if you're looking for a good mystery then many of French's other books are much more enjoyable.

I don't even know how many stars to give this because my feelings are all over the place right now. This book had me hooked and it fucked me up but that ENDING. Idk man. Idk.

2.5 stars. From what I’m seeing on Goodreads, this novel is a bit of a departure for French. I’d be up for reading more of her - she’s got great dialogue and did keep me on the hook for the whodunit - but this was drawn out, simply put.

I've tried to read Tana French a couple of times, her detective series, but it never took, so I was glad this standalone came along. And I liked it very much! It was so solid right up to the end where it got a little nutty, but I didn't mind at that point. This was one of those books, like Black House by SK and Peter Straub, where I felt creeped out in my real life even after putting the book down.

I'm going to try her series again....
