Yikes. I wanted to like this one, but it was blah. I think it’s because I didn’t like the characters.
I hate to be like “It’s not the Dublin Murder Squad and it sucked.” but it’s not the Dublin Murder Squad and it sucked!!!!! I didn’t like any of the characters or either of the mysteries. :((((

I wanted to love it and I typically do love a "slow build" to twist, but this book just felt way longer than it needed to be. Still enjoyed it, just would have preferred a bit more action in the plot and cutting some of the length. Looking forward to Tana's next book!
This was such a painful book to get through. It had moments where I thought, oh! Finally we’re getting to some excitement, and then it would go flat again. Very tedious to get through.
Wow! This one blew me away. Stellar writing, intricate characters, and a story that will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can...definitely her best book yet, which is saying a lot. To say I could not put it down would be a huge understatement. The narration is haunting and completely mind-bending.
I live French's Dublin Murder Squad books and wasn't sure what to expect in her first stand-alone novel. To some extent it felt similar - same lovely writing and it was a deep character study, which are usually the heart of her mysteries. And there was still a murder mystery here, but it takes second place to the family drama and the slow mental decline of Toby, the main character. I did miss the perspective of the detectives and the police procedural aspect of most of her earlier novels, but think the character study of Toby was fascinating especially the exploration of priviledge.
Didn't enjoy as much as most of the others, but still a solid mystery
