This book was somewhat entertaining as a suspense/ thriller, but also greatly frustrating. It is the only novel I have read by Tana French. I found her prose quite masterful, but the book was way too long with many twists and turns. I found the main character Toby not very likeable and I stopped caring about him early on. The final twist before the end was improbable and hard to fathom. Some interesting points were made about luck and privilege and the nature of character. But I don’t know if I would recommend this book to anyone. 2.5 stars.

A slow, slow read. Certainly skillfully written. The author’s attention to detail is impressive, and the book feels so real, like a perfectly wrought scene out of everyday life. But ultimately, because of how long and drawn out everything is, there’s not much payoff when the various twists/mysteries are revealed. It’s much more of a character study than a mystery. A meditation on class and privilege. The MC ultimately learns nothing, and that probably makes sense. But it’s not that fun to read about.
