um ok I take it back, slow burn but boy does that ending BURN
I started this book 3 years ago and left it as DNF. I kept trying because I’ve loved all Tana French’s books prior to this. Her prior books were from the detectives perspective. This was from a citizen’s and it just wasn’t the same.
This novel is a departure, as it is told from the perspective of the person who is the suspect. It was a bit slow-moving to start with, but I got hooked pretty quickly. I wasn't a big fan of the ending. It took a turn I didn't think it needed to, but I was guessing about "Whodunnit" until the answer was revealed. I didn't dislike this novel, but I'm hoping for a return to the Murder Squad in her next novel.
Yowza. Definitely start with French's Dublin Murder Squad series--those are great. I felt I had to give this at least a three because she's such a good writer, but I spent most of the book wishing it were over. I don't feel like saying more b/c of spoilers, but feel free to ask me for details if you know me.
Meh. This book is SSSSSLLLLLOOOOWWWWW. So slow. Even when it gets moving it's slow. I have LOVED ALL of her other books, but I don't think I'd recommend this one. There were a few interesting parts, but not enough to slog through the whole book.
Well written, as all Tana French books are, but I felt disappointed by the last 100-150 pages. The ending was predictable and annoying. It kept me intrigued and fulfilled my need for a mystery thriller but paled in comparison to French's Dublin Murder Squad series. If you want to experience the best of French, skip this one and read The Likeness and The Trespasser (and any others) first!
Off to a great start with a dual unfolding mystery and intriguing characters. A nice technique used to make our narrator an unreliable one. Unfortunately, the story falls apart at the end, and I was left disappointed.
