What most struck me in this novella is the voice—it's distant and cool without being uncompassionate, an impressive bit of writerly control. That distance gives the events of the story (it's no spoiler to say they concern the downfall of a lying, cheating father/husband/politician and the impact of that downfall on those around him) an almost scientific inevitability, making Death of a Ladies' Man into a compelling study of power and powerlessness.
