I Love You, I Hate You by Elizabeth Davis

This funny, sweet, and mildly angsty You’ve Got Mail style romance was just what I needed after reading darker fantasy series. The main characters are revealed to be opposing lawyers stumbling into hate sex and also anonymous Twitter friends within the first chapter. The rest of the book is about the gradual development of their IRL relationship, the tension of loving their virtual BFFs at the same time, and how those worlds converge and realign. I loved these characters and how their two relationships with each other let us see them as complex and dynamic characters right from the get go. The pacing was fantastic, with time skipping along between interactions and the developments spread throughout the story so that there was no wallowing to fill time or frantic rush of action to create conflict. It really was a bit like reading an old RomCom movie.

Honestly, I quite enjoyed this one. The protagonist is self assured, not a virginal innocent girl trope that I don't like, and, it does in fact subvert the expectations. Iwish more romance books were written like this. I recommend it.

This is sweet and fun. I loved the cultural (Parks and Rec and When Harry Met Sally shout outs mean everything to me) and local references (set in Minnesota!) and the witty, funny and progressive author’s voice.

this was a quick, enjoyable enemies-with-benefits/you’ve got mail romcom

i enjoyed the premise, that they’re both lawyers, and the dynamic between them. the chemistry was there and i was throughly entertained.

i did find victoria annoying sometimes, and the main conflict was one massive miscommunication. also i found it hard to believe that neither of them figured out the other was nora/luke. but nevertheless, i would recommend this book if you’re looking for a light, fun, steamy romcom

I absolutely adored this book! The perfect balance of romance, love and lust! This book sees our two main characters go on huge journeys of personal growth and understanding and just hits absolutely every mark for me!

i vibed for the most part but owen knew for *so* long about victoria being nora and he had so many opportunities.
i also think lawyers should be a bit better at communicating.
they were both standing in their own ways and i did a lot of yelling.
but yeah, i vibed. definitely a fun little romp.

Victoria was insufferable. Owen was quite near perfect. I'm such a softie for an enemies with benefits trope. Lots of pretentious sections of writing that added nothing to the plot and only made me think that this author must spend a lot of her time on twitter and think that translates to real life, but other than that, this is one of my favorite books I've read this year.

A fast and endearing read!

My next comment is a spoiler for Twisted Love by Ana Huang, steer clear if you haven't read it. If you have, you'll know what I'm talking about. (might still be a minor spoiler if you haven't read I Love You, I Hate You)

Spoiler
Dearest Alex Volkov, this is the only way I will accept groveling via singing. It has to be bad and embarrassing.

I liked the enemies-to-lovers here, this is exactly what I needed from the trope.
This is not "we're trading a few insults", this is "YOU'RE AN AWFUL HUMAN BEING, ALSO WHY ARE YOU HOT".

For this to be perfect, I needed one less argument at the end. Victoria and Owen seem to break up and never want to see each other again for the final to have the impact it could've had.

Overall, it was very much worth it.

PS - consider my rating a bit higher than I would usually give this book. This has been much needed eye bleach after a DNF, so it seems miles better than it may be for others ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
