I can understand why some wouldn't like this book, but if you're into dense world building this is for you. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes.
4.5. Solid first book in the series. Excited to see where it goes.

Overall a great first entry into what feels like a huge universe. Firmly plants you into the mindset of our main character and has you guessing and excited to see where our characters go next and how we end up where we inevitably know we do, thanks to the unique framing of the story as a retelling of our main characters life. The first half of the book was a little dense and hard for me to get invested in as it felt more like a retelling of hadrians past, rather than us experiencing his life. However once we meet our first cielcin, I was in.
Oh poor Hadrian, he's got such a difficult life as a privileged Gary Stu.
This. This is something special. Only once before, with The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, have I felt such an excitement within myself to discover everything there is to find in this universe. The Sun Eater himself is someone that inspires such fascination within me, when he deigns to share his outlook of his former selves, that I cannot stop wondering at what further cruelties he has committed in the future or the present. Be they deserved or not.
Momentary plagues of pacing reoccurred plentifully, but I find that those momentary weaknesses did not stifle my enjoyment of this book one single bit. Possibly even, allowing me to enjoy this detailed universe in an even more fantastical fashion.
Thus I await with silent excitement for the next time I am permitted enough time to read another story of Hadrian Marlowe.
