This was fine. It's a major pet peeve of mine for a book to keep referencing something over and over and not reveal it for hundreds of pages. Like WE GET IT. YOU ARE NOT TELLING US THE IDENTITY OF YOUR HUSBAND. And then I was really not into the weird transphobic-seeming way that the MC was trying to "detect" that the woman running the boarding house was possibly trans. And then I thought it was lazy writing for the Bad Guy to misgender her. Like, think of another way for him to be shitty. Also, the narration of the Latina character that the book said had a really heavy accent was just not at ALL the correct accent. If the author is going to throw in a Latina character, it feels natural to then ensure that your narrator can do the accent that you wrote? Everyone kind of sucked in this book. Probably won't read this author again.

The first bad book this year. I knew my luck was running out (reading so many lovely books in a row) but I didn’t expect it to happen this fast or be this bad. I wish I could get a refund for the time spent reading this.

There’s not one good thing I can say about this book: the plot is hackneyed, the writing is uninspired, the so-called twist was underwhelming, and characters are one dimensional and unlikeable to boot. And I’ve not even gotten to the racism, transphobia and fatphobia: a disgusting trifecta.

I rarely give books a single star. Since I started actively using Goodreads in 2019, I’ve only done this with 3 books. I reserve this for books that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, whether well written or not. This book has the dubious honour of joining their ranks as Number 4🏆

Congratulations, I guess.
