This is a fun and very light mystery series, but this particular entry I felt, was starting to show the seams a bit (to use the sewing term). The will they or won’t they dynamics of the main romantic relationship are often pretty uncomfortable, because Harry is often really mean to Cleo. I don’t actually like them as a couple especially with that constant undertone and the vibe that he doesn’t really like her. Sometimes he seems to but a lot of times he seems not to and that’s just really uncomfortable and not something I find tantalizing in a romantic story.
I’d really prefer if the relationship weren’t part of the story so that drags it down, and then this particular mystery was interesting, but the solution turned out to be so complicated, and there were so many red herrings that it kind of took the fun out of it.
The full cast otherwise is still really good, but I wish that it was more about Cleo and the other people at the hotel solving the mysteries than this frankly, unappealing, romantic lead guy she’s mooning around over.
But as that’s the core of the series, either I have to accept that or stop reading.

I think the pace is finally picking up especially the relationships between Cleo and the supporting characters.
The mystery is better in this one.

the title sets it up. Cleo and her cousin go to a faux French designer for dresses for a ball and the woman ends up dead. The personal stories keep evolving, even if her maid is a bit too much to believe. Good mystery.
