made me cry at the end but was just not my type of book (slow, lifestory-esque)

I really enjoyed this book! The book is a beautiful portrait of a family drama told with the backdrop of the bewitching Dutch House that touches the lives of every family member. I finished it in a matter of days. I don't always recommend this but I strongly suggest listening to the audiobook version. It is narrated by Tom Hanks and there could not be a more perfect voice to bring this story to life. Enjoy!

Quite dull and mostly inert. Kept at a distance throughout by the style and choices made. Mostly, matters are relayed to the reader, by telling and not showing. Tom Hanks as narrator also uninspired. Skipped two hours at about halfway point to be able to get through. For library book discussion. Curious what they will make of it.

I LOVED that Tom Hanks narrated this audiobook, but I found the story itself just ok and not very memorable.

This book felt frustrating. The writing is impeccable and I will certainly be reading more of Ann Patchett however I can only describe the Dutch house as disappointing.
The first third was so strong, I was hooked by the first few pages. There was intrigue and well thought out characters and the promise of an enthralling story spanning years.
Unfortunately after we leave the Dutch house, the plot and more importantly, the plot seems a little lost and pointless. I found the final third a real struggle to get through and ultimately found the book unsatisfying.
It had so much promise but left a lot to be desired for me.
