This really was surprisingly good
I get how this was radical at the time and there was so much interesting reflection on queer culture, being gay in a heterosexual world, feminism, etc. also a lot of relatable lines. HOWEVER- the incest, sex with minors, and non-consent ruined it. Theres a place in literature to explore those themes, but i dont think this is that place, and it wasnt done well. lesbians deserve a better classic book.
This book brings you through the life of a lesbian in a time that most were not out and proud. It gives a rare perspective of a gay woman who is very unapologetic in who she is. That aspect of the book is why I did not give it a one star. Other than that I did not enjoy the style in which her story is told. Nor did I enjoy some of the stories that were told. We only get a peak in her life whenever there is a major sexual experience about to happen. Some of which are morally questionable, why take an ostracized community and create a character who does some things that may land some in jail (sleeping with a minor, forcing herself on a woman, and borderline incestuous moments). I did like how the book was wrapped up with Carrie.
