It’s a big deal in the history of lesbian lit and should be read for that reason. But there’s so much better stuff out there now. 

well written and in the first half I really loved it, with Molly being a very relatable young narrator. further reading and class discussion reveal prejudices in the author (bioessentialism/lack of regard for intersectionality) and, being autobiographical, Molly’s character and behavior, that in some ways make the actual quality of the novel itself unredeemable. as a formational piece of queer literature, I still think it is worth reading, but with a very critical eye.
