I wanted to like it so bad! But I was bored and I hate to say because again I wanted to like it but the FMC was irritating, especially when she goes into the doubt spiral.

I liked this book and I had fun reading it. When the synopsis mentions your favorite show of all time, it could go either way but I definitely enjoyed it and saw the inspiration. A lot of recent alien romances happen off Earth and that’s one thing I’m always missing! The connection between Jen and Tam was sweet and the yearning made me kinda giddy so I’ll take it as a win! I also liked all the SpaceCon and group chat / found family elements.

What if the 2011 Simon Pegg and Nick Frost vehicle Paul wasn't a comedy and was instead a plodding, unconvincing interspecies romance? Because that's what this book attempts, but doesn't manage to sell you on the romance part. I could not buy these two characters together and in fact was rooting for them to break up by the end. The heroine was immature in the way she handled her love interest's completely telegraphed and reasonable desire to return to his home planet, and the alien hero is completely uninteresting in the first place.
Nice cover art, though.

Unless she’s indie-publishing, I do not believe Aguirre will ever write another Strange Love. If you’re looking for that, this one isn’t it.
Like all of her other trad-published romances I’ve read, this work is pretty cozy and even lower in spice than her human romances. (It’s not closed door, but it’s close and focuses more on the intellectual/emotional sides of attraction than Raging Lust—because both MCs are Aspecs. If you’re looking for a horny read, this isn’t it.) I really appreciated and enjoyed what felt like a truer representation of graysexual/demisexual rep, down to the slowness of the build up. The use of the chat logs to build and establish the relationship over the course of a year without needing a 600+ page book was efficient and clever. (And NONE of it was based on looks. Fuck yeah!) And in true Aspec fashion, there’s neurodiversity rep in this book as well—again, it felt really well-handled. One of Aguirre’s strengths as an author is she seems to put a lot of work and thought into what she rights about marginalized groups.
As is my usual niggle with her work, the conflicts do not feel particularly serious and get wrapped up in an unsatisfactory way. For the build up, it’s rather a let down.
But overall, this is super cute and cozy, low stakes, and engaging enough to read in a couple longer sittings.

This is a delightfully fun read for those who are fans of comic cons, alien romance, and finding friendship in nerd realms. I loved everyone and I’m honored to have been able to be friends with them while reading.
