Classics have never really appealed to me but zombies always have. It's a mix that shouldn't work but amazingly does.

I think my favourite line of the book really sells it
'No ninjas! How was that possible? Five daughters brought up at home without any ninjas!'
If that doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what will!

Interesting read. Different than I expected. Much easier to read and more enjoyable than I'd have thought.

Great idea, crap execution.

Some may be purists - this would not be for you. But I got a total kick out of it.

this is a 100% genuine review, complete with spoilers.

i actually had a decent time reading this (mostly laughing/in disbelief). however there is so much that i hate about this adaptation. namely,
  • the insane references to the "Orient" and the fact that "true" zombie hunter warriors have to be trained by Japanese masters and thus Chinese kung fu doesn't cut it. is there a reason they couldnt have been trained in england 😭
  • mr bennet and mrs gardiner canonically cheating on their spouses with other people ???? WHAT??
  • darcy beating a woman and breaking wickham's legs and calling that justice after wickham threatened to break a stableboy's legs when they were kids. HELLO????????
  • related point: because of the nature of killing zombies, half of the people in this book are weirdly unhingedly violent
  • the RANDOM UNNECESSARY comments by EVERY CHARACTER about collins being ugly and fat???? THIS ADDS NOTHING TO THE STORY 😭😭
  • the references to "most english parts". maybe i dont want to see bad penis jokes in my p&p adaptation about zombie hunting

in summary: a lot of the characterization changed because of the plot details that were added in to make it zombie adjacent and. i didnt like it. and im usually a forgiving reader of adaptations.

anyways. i honestly dont even hate the zombies aspect of this book but  the way it was done couldve been better. i dont know how, but still.

things i did enjoy:
  • charlotte turning into a zombie arc was unexpected but i  thought it was clever. she was lost from lizzy forever fr (side note, collins dying by suicide arc was also one of the things i disliked. and i dont even LIKE collins)
  • the way everything besides the zombie parts is just the original book verbatim
  • its kind of camp. like 20% camp compared to 5% enjoyable and 75% bad

  • Read for Book Roast's Magical Readathon: NEWTs Exams. Subject: Muggle Studies, O Level. (A Retelling)

If this book has proven anything to me, it's that Pride and Prejudice and the like are NOT MY JAM.

If slapping zombies and ninjas into the 19th century isn't going to make it more enjoyable for me, NOTHING WILL.

This started out strong. The humor is definitely here, the proper society ladies who just happen to use katana swords and muskets to take out "unmentionables" who may take to eating their neighbors. Mustn't let something as insignificant as a zombie outbreak stop oneself from finding a proper husband.

And you know, if someone happens to marry one of the "sorry stricken", it's best not to tell them. They'll figure it out eventually.....right?

But this novelty wears off. With a quickness. And then you're still reading Pride and Prejudice. And it's still mind numbing.

If you like Pride and Prejudice, and you enjoy zombies, maybe you will like this? But I feel like if you like one and not the other, you're best just passing this up.

I like Jane Austen's writing, it's funny with romantic tension. I do think the Zombies are unnecessary, and I would rather just read Pride and Prejudice
