On the night before a worldwide COVID-19 quarantine, Don Barlow gets an unexpected visitor - a young girl who claims to be the daughter of a son he gave up for adoption when he was a teen - a son he has never met. Thus begins this “who is telling the truth” mystery. Very timely! In fact, this may be the first novella with Covid being a major part of the story. 4+ hours on audio.

Another short novella to pass the time. Again, it was fine. It had a strong focus on Covid & the lockdown which was kind of off-putting but I have to accept stories will be written about that time. An okay twist.

Always enjoy Caroline Overington books and this short novella was great. Kind of predicted the twist but not the ending. I had a little Covid overkill the last few years but it’s been a while and listening to the story brought me back into lockdown and the things we were allowed to do!

Audible freebie. I think this was really well done. Also I really enjoyed that COVID was actually a part of the setting. Interesting thriller.

DNF. Too much time goes into other character's POV instead of the actual meat of the story.

Fast paced. Kept me interested until the conclusion. Enjoyable ending.

Overly produced with sound effects, as with most audible exclusive/originals.

Book 25 for 2020 was "The Cuckoo's Cry" by Caroline Overington. I listened to the free Audible Audio version of this 4 3/4 hour long mystery novella that was included in my subscription as an Audible Original. I enjoyed both the narration and the story.

Set in Australia during the current pandemic, the story is about a lonely retired man, who as a teen fathered a child that was given up for adoption. One evening, shortly before the pandemic lockdown started in Australia, a young girl rings his doorbell claiming to be his granddaughter - her father being this adopted child.

Intrigued, and motivated mostly by loneliness, he allows her in to hear her story. The girl has details that make it seem she could be telling the truth. He invites her to stay for a few days. Then the pandemic lockdown happens and the man decides to let the young girl stay on as a permanent visitor. Is she his granddaughter or is this a con? You'll have to listen to the story to find out.
