It’s a solid origin story and I can see why the film used it

What a cool, fun, heartwarming book! I got it on a whim, and I was reluctant to read it because most "revamps" don't fly with me. Shazam! however, was a true doozy. Geoff Johns has proved to us time and again that he is one of the best writers out there today (Green Lantern, Blackest Night, The Flash...). With this book, he reaches new heights in terms of character study and humor. I give it 4 stars, because, damn it, I wanted to see Captain Marv... I mean, Shazam! beat the crap out of Black Adam. Didn't happen. In fact, they barely fought. The Marvel family was one of the best features; Mary was fantastically illustrated.
Shazam! has heart, pathos and humor. It is a joy to read, and inspires us all to recapture the "child-like wonder" that we too often have left behind in our life.

A fun story of found family filled with magic, humour, and Christmas cheer. Foster parents generally get very poor representation in media. The parents in Shazam, however, break from negative stereotypes and are actually caring and responsive to their several children. Billy must learn that family is not set in stone and instead who you choose it to be. As a queer person, this kind of story really resonates with my own experience. The story also emphasises that no one is pure good, only that we have the potential to do good, and even good intentions can lead to dark consequences

A fantastic modernized origin to one of my favorite superheroes. It's well told, well paced, and exquisitely drawn. It's full of nods to the pre-New 52 mythos. I love it and I'm really hoping Shazam gets his own monthly series some time soon.

Great reintroduction of Shazam into the DC universe. I liked how they kept the core of the character and took away the hokey aspects. Hopefully this turns into a Shazam monthly.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this book. Even though I'm a fan of Geoff John's writing in general, I'm also an old-school Captain Marvel fan. So I wasn't quite sure how I'd take to this interpretation of the character since I'd heard Billy Batson was kind of an ass in this new version. And he is. But not in an unlikable way. He's a bit hard, due to the circumstances of his childhood. But he has a good heart, which is sort of the whole point. I liked the cast of characters Johns surrounded Shazam with. There's a good sense of fun in the book, and I really like the way Gary Frank's style has evolved.
